Being a digital nomad always sounds exciting. Waking up in unfamiliar cities, experiencing different cultures and keeping your job while doing it all... But a good internet connection and a beautiful view are not enough for this dream to be sustainable. If you really want to build a comfortable and legal life, choosing the right visa is one of the most critical steps (and this was my weakest point at first:).

That's why in this article, I'm giving you a simple but useful overview of the latest and most accessible visa options for digital nomads as of 2025, based on my own experience and research. You'll see the opportunities that await you in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and maybe even shape your route with this information.

1. What to Consider When Choosing a Visa?

The first step in digital nomadism is often the most confusing: Which visa do I choose?

If you plan to stay in the country you're going to, not just for a few weeks, but maybe for a few months or longer, choosing the right visa is very important. Because it's not just an “entry permit”, it also determines how freely you can work there, what rights you have, and even how much freedom you have in terms of banking, health, accommodation, etc.

Here are some realistic questions to consider when making your decision:

How long is the visa? Can it be extended?
Some visas are limited to 30 days, while others can be extended for a year or more. Visas with an extension option reduce the stress of constantly changing countries. Let me give you an example since I am currently in Bali, I bought a 30-day visa because it was easy, I can extend it 1 more time before leaving the country, so I can stay for 2 months in total. 

Is there a minimum income requirement? 

Many countries want to see that the applicant has a certain level of income. This is usually around $2,000-$4,000 per month. Sometimes a bank account balance is also required. 

Who can apply?
Are you self-employed? Do you own your own company? Do you work remotely for a company? Visas can offer application criteria according to these differences.

Is health insurance mandatory?
Most countries require comprehensive travel health insurance. Some only accept policies from local insurance companies.

Are you traveling with family or a partner? 

Some visas allow for spouses or children, while others only accept individual applications.

Recommendation:
Before applying for a visa, take into account not only documents and time, but also the country's digital infrastructure, community and cost of living. If possible, even visit beforehand and see how long you can stay as a tourist. Getting a visa may be easy, but if the internet is slow, there is no community, the airport is far away... the experience may not be as pleasant as you imagined.

2. Most Popular Digital Nomad Visas (Updated for 2025)

There may be different motivations, such as long-term comfort, tax benefits or being close to communities. Here are some of the most preferred visas for digital nomads in 2025:

Portugal 🇵🇹 - D7 Visa 

Duration: 2 years (extendable) 

Requirements: Monthly income of €870 and a bank deposit of €12,000 with proof of passive income or remote work 

Pros: Free movement in the Schengen area

Spain 🇪🇸 - Digital Nomad Visa 

Duration: 1 year (extendable)

Requirements: $2,760 monthly income

Tax advantage: Low rate income tax for the first 5 years

Estonia 🇪🇪 - Digital Nomad Visa

Duration: 1 year 

Requirements: Minimum income of €3,500/month in the last 6 months

Pros: Digitized application process, strong technology and nomad community

Mexico 🇲🇽 - Temporary Resident Visa 

Duration: 1 year (can be extended up to 4 years)

Requirements: Proof of income of $48,000 per year

Pros: Cheap living, colorful lifestyle, large nomad network

Georgia 🇬🇪 - Remotely From Georgia Program 

Duration: 1 year

Requirements: $2,000 monthly income or $24,000 bank savings

Pros: Easy application, additional benefits for many nationalities

Suggestion:
If Europe is starting to tire you out, head to Latin America. Colombia and Mexico offer a sense of freedom and community spirit.

3. Surprise: Countries that are not yet official but are nomadic havens

Some countries don't offer an official visa program for digital nomads, but in practice they are more than suitable for this lifestyle. Here are those “no visa but everything” countries:

Indonesia (Bali) 🇮🇩:

Türkiye 🇹🇷:

Sri Lanka 🇱🇰:

4. How to Apply (Step-by-Step Mini Guide)

Getting a digital nomad visa is not as complicated as you might think, but there are still a few critical steps to take. Here's a simple and clear roadmap from start to finish:

1- Choose the right type of visa

Each country's visa for digital nomads may have a different name. Look out for terms like “remote work”, “freelancer”, “temporary resident”, etc.

2- Gather the necessary documents

Documents usually required: valid passport, proof of income, health insurance, criminal record, sometimes employment contract or company documents, etc. 

3- Apply online or make a consular appointment

Some countries accept digital applications, others require a face-to-face meeting. Read the application steps carefully.

4- Follow the application process

In some countries, application results are available in 1-2 weeks, while in others it can take up to 2-3 months. Don't forget to check your e-mail box and spam folder :)

5- Before you go: Insurance + digital file organization

Get your travel health insurance and keep all documents (visa approval, insurance, flight information) digitally backed up.

Being a digital nomad may only seem like a “cool” life from the outside. Thinking about the conditions, processes and uncertainties when choosing a destination can sometimes even affect your motivation. That's why choosing the right visa can make a much bigger difference than you think.
